5 things quietly slowing down South African websites

The friction patterns we see most across South African business websites — and the fix for each. Based on reproducible audits across 20+ sectors.

Across the sectors we've measured, the same handful of problems show up again and again — and none of them require a rebuild to fix. Here are the five most common sources of digital friction on South African business websites, and what to do about each.

1. A slow mobile load (high LCP)

The single most common drag. Largest Contentful Paint — how long until the main content actually appears — routinely runs past four seconds on mobile, where most South African traffic now comes from. Every extra second is customers leaving before they've seen anything. Fix: compress and correctly size images, defer non-critical scripts, and serve modern image formats. It's the highest-ROI change most sites can make.

2. JavaScript that hides the content

Heavily client-rendered sites send an almost-empty shell first, then build the page in the browser. That delays what the customer sees and what search engines and AI engines can read. Fix: render critical content and contact details server-side so they appear immediately — not after a framework boots.

3. A buried or missing contact path

We regularly find sites with no visible phone link, no instant channel, and a long form as the only way in. Interested buyers won't hunt. Fix: put a tappable phone number and an instant channel (WhatsApp or chat) where they're visible without scrolling, and cut entry forms to the few fields you truly need.

4. Thin trust signals

No named people, no visible company identity, no reviews or accreditations. Buyers in considered purchases need to know who they're dealing with. Fix: show real people and credentials, surface reviews, and state the legal entity clearly. This is cheap and it moves conversion.

5. No structured data or authority depth

Missing schema and shallow, un-attributed content leave both Google and AI answer engines with nothing to cite. Fix: add Organization, Article and FAQ structured data, publish genuinely useful depth, and attribute it to a real author.
